Careers & Apprenticeships

Careers and apprenticeships

If you’re considering your career options and are thinking that a career in the electrical or communications cabling sector might be right for you, you couldn’t have chosen a more exciting and dynamic industry to think about.

Electrotechnology is a diverse and interesting field in which to develop a career. It offers great variety and a wide choice of sectors to work in, and different jobs within those sectors.

Most people who consider a career in electrotechnology usually think of becoming a domestic (home) electrician. They see themselves working in houses, running cable, connecting power points, light fittings and other small electrical appliances.

But this is only part of the work of a domestic electrician and an even smaller part of the electrical industry.

More information in this site

The Careers & Apprenticeships section, which is in the National part of this website, will answer a lot of your questions about becoming an electrician or cabler and what it is like to work in this sector (which is commonly known as electrotechnology).  This link will take you to the home page of the Careers & Apprenticeships National section.  But don't forget to look on the left hand navigation bar to see a whole range of topics under Careers & Apprenticeships, including information about training, how to find a job and some case studies from some talented young people who are well on the way to developing great careers.

Also, you can check out the Apprentice Awards section to see how NECA recognises the best young workers each year.

Or if you are a secondary school student with a passion for how things work, you can check out the Electrotechnology School Student Awards and see how you can enter your next project.
